San Anton Food Market in Madrid
San Anton is a wonderful food market in Chueca, Central Madrid. Visiting the market is a great way to see a modern local market, sample delicious foods and relax on the rooftop terrace. The market was originally built in 1945 but in 2002 it received a complete renovation which transformed it into the modern building we see today. Just a short walk from both Gran Via and Retiro Park it’s an excellent stop to refuel and rest a while from city sightseeing.
This indoor market is divided into different levels with easy access via escalators and lifts. It’s bright and inviting as light floods through the large windows. Everything is beautifully presented and well labelled but if you’re not too sure about prices or want to know more about the produce just ask the staff, they are all very helpful.
The first floor has stalls laden with fresh produce. Fruit and vegetables are piled high alongside rows of meat and seafood. Bags of traditional dried goods likes beans, pulses and rice, plus traditional cooking spices and herbs.
Some of the best local restaurants and artisan shops hold stalls at San Anton food market. Treat yourself to a coffee and pastry, a freshly squeezed juice or pick up some cheese and crackers for a snack later.
Hop on the escalator to see the choice of ready to eat food behind the counters upstairs. Select a Spanish tapas or two to enjoy with glass of local wine. Try some Mediterranean flavours at the Greek food stall or sample fresh Asian sushi and ramen. The bar on this floor stocks over 100 different wines and a good selection of cold draught beers. Everyone stands in typical Madrid style at high tables while chatting, drinking and enjoying the tasty foods.
If you would prefer to sit down and enjoy a larger meal from the menu, go up to the rooftop restaurant La Cocina de San Antón. The tropical décor is fun and inviting and they offer a very good value lunch set menu. The outside terrace has comfortable seating and a fun cocktail menu. Perfect for a relaxed afternoon drink while you enjoy the view over the pretty buildings of Chueca.
