During our Madrid Free Walking Tour you can enjoy one of the greatest shows in the city, the Changing of the Guard at the Royal Palace in Madrid!
The first Wednesday of each month the Royal Palace in Madrid is dressed up and decorated with flags to host an incredible spectacle, worthy of the most emblematic palaces in Europe.
Since it was held for the first time in 2007, the Changing of the Guard at the Royal Palace has become one of the favorite attractions for tourists and locals: more than four hundreds soldiers, vintage carriages, artillery pieces, Spanish horses and a music band.
At 12 o’clock drums and horse footsteps resound throughout the square. The gates of the Palace open up and hundreds of soldiers, dressed in uniforms of the nineteenth century, march to the beat of the music. Definitely a show that makes all attendees shudder.
The event lasts approximately 45 minutes and the influx of public is considerable. In fact additional stands need to be installed to accommodate the tourists. During the ceremony are offered explanations (only in Spanish) about the different regiments of the Royal Guard, weapons, history, etc.
